Sunglasses Lens Materials Compared
Frame material gets all the attention. The lens is the part you actually look through - here's what glass, polycarbonate, CR-39 and nylon each trade away.
This site spends most of its time on frame material, because that is where the interesting decisions are and where sellers are vaguest. But the lens is the part you actually look through, and lens material is a genuinely separate question with genuinely separate trade-offs. An acetate frame can carry any of these; the choice changes weight, clarity and how long the pair stays looking good.
The four materials

Glass
The oldest answer and still the sharpest. Glass has the highest optical clarity of the four and dramatically better scratch resistance than any plastic — a glass lens looked after reasonably will outlast the frame around it. Some premium makers still specify it, and if you have ever wondered why a particular expensive pair looked noticeably clearer than everything else you tried, glass is often the reason.
Two costs. It is heavy, and that weight compounds with an acetate frame’s own density — a large glass-lensed acetate frame is a substantial object on your nose. And it can shatter under impact, which rules it out for sport, cycling or anywhere a knock is plausible. Glass also needs a UV-absorbing treatment; it is not inherently a UV filter.
Polycarbonate
The impact-resistance champion, and the reason it dominates sport eyewear, children’s eyewear and safety glasses. It is also the lightest of the four, which matters on a big frame or a long day.
Its useful bonus is that polycarbonate blocks essentially all UV as an inherent property of the materialrather than as an added treatment. Its weakness is softness: polycarbonate scratches far more readily than glass or CR-39, so it relies on a hard coat, and once that coat is worn the lens marks quickly. This is why so many people conclude their sunglasses are “cheap” after a season — usually it is polycarbonate plus a habit of dry-wiping, which our cleaning guide addresses directly.
Note the distinction from frame material: polycarbonate lenses are excellent and entirely normal in a good frame. A polycarbonate frame is a different conversation, covered in acetate vs polycarbonate.
CR-39
A plastic that has been the standard prescription lens material for decades, and the sensible middle path. Better optical clarity than polycarbonate, considerably lighter than glass, better scratch resistance than polycarbonate, and inexpensive.
What it gives up is impact resistance — it is tougher than glass but well short of polycarbonate — and it is thicker for a given prescription, which matters if you are having sun lenses made up. Like glass, it needs a UV treatment rather than blocking UV by nature. For a fashion acetate frame worn daily by someone who is not playing sport in it, CR-39 is arguably the best-balanced choice available.
Nylon and Trivex
The premium performance answer: light, genuinely tough, optically very good, and used in high-end sport lenses and better prescription sun lenses. Trivex in particular combines polycarbonate-class impact resistance with noticeably better optics. The catch is price, and the fact that budget listings almost never specify it — if a cheap pair does not name its lens material, it is not this.
What actually matters more than material
Three things outrank the material choice for most buyers, and it is worth saying so plainly.
UV protection.Non-negotiable at every price and in every material. Polycarbonate and Trivex handle it inherently; glass and CR-39 need treatment. Either way, confirm the stated specification rather than assuming — see what UV400 means and how to check it.
Tint. The material sets the physics; the tint sets the experience. Gray, brown, green, rose and yellow each do different things to contrast and color perception, and that difference is far more noticeable day to day than the substrate. Our lens tint guide covers it.

What to do with this
For a daily acetate frame: CR-39 or polycarbonate, polarized if you drive or spend time near water, with a stated UV400. That is the combination behind most of the frames on our best acetate sunglasses roundup, and it is the right default for almost everyone.
Choose glass if optical sharpness is the thing you notice and you treat your sunglasses carefully. Choose polycarbonate or Trivexif the pair will be worn where an impact is possible. And do not read too much into a budget listing that stays silent about its lens material — treat it as unstated rather than guessing, the same way we treat an unstated frame material.

What is the best lens material for sunglasses?
There is no single best, because the materials trade against each other. Glass gives the sharpest optics and the best scratch resistance but is heavy and can shatter. Polycarbonate is the most impact-resistant and the lightest, which is why sport and children's eyewear use it, but it scratches easily without a hard coat. CR-39 sits in the middle with better optics than polycarbonate and better weight than glass. Are glass sunglasses lenses better?
Optically, yes - glass has the highest clarity and by far the best scratch resistance of the common materials, which is why some premium eyewear still specifies it. The trade-offs are real though. Glass is heavy, and on a large frame that weight lands on your nose all day. It is also more prone to shattering under impact, which is why it is a poor choice for sport, cycling or anywhere a knock is likely. If you want the sharpest possible view from a frame you treat carefully, glass earns its place.
Does the lens material affect UV protection?
Partly, and this is where people get caught out. Polycarbonate and Trivex block essentially all UV inherently, as a property of the material itself. Glass and CR-39 do not automatically - they need a UV-absorbing treatment or coating, which every reputable lens gets, but which is a manufacturing step rather than an intrinsic property. In practice this means you should confirm the stated UV specification regardless of material, rather than assuming the material has handled it for you.
Why do my lenses scratch so easily?
Almost certainly polycarbonate without an intact hard coat, and almost certainly from dry-wiping. Polycarbonate is the softest of the common lens materials, so the anti-scratch coating is doing all the work, and once that coating is worn or damaged the lens underneath marks quickly. The single biggest cause is wiping a dusty lens with a shirt hem or a paper towel, which drags abrasive grit across the surface.
