Why the wayfarer suits almost everyone

The shape works because it’s a compromise between angular and soft — straight enough at the top to add definition, tapered enough at the bottom not to look boxy. That makes it flattering on round faces (the angles add contrast), oval faces (nearly everything suits them), and most in between. About the only face that needs care is a very angular square one, which is better softened by a rounder frame.

Acetate versus “wayfarer-style” plastic

The wayfarer is copied endlessly, and most copies are injection-molded plastic, not acetate. That’s fine for a cheap beach pair — and we include a genuinely good one here, honestly labeled as polycarbonate — but if you want the depth, weight and layered tortoise of the real thing, insist on cellulose acetate. The Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer is the acetate benchmark; the budget acetate options give you the material for less.

Sizing matters more on a wayfarer

Because the classic wayfarer runs on the larger, deeper side, it can swamp a small face. Check the lens width on the listing; if you have a petite face, look for a smaller or “new wayfarer” sizing. On a larger face, the full original size looks exactly as intended.
