Cellulose acetate begins with cellulose: the fibrous structural material that makes a plant stand up. Where it stops being natural

Raw cellulose cannot be milled into a sunglasses frame. To become a workable material it is chemically converted: treated with acetic acid and acetic anhydride, which is where the “acetate” in the name comes from. That reaction is industrial chemistry, not a farmyard process, and it is unavoidable — without it there is no sheet to cut.

Then come plasticizers. On their own, acetate flakes are brittle and useless. Plasticizers are what make the cured sheet flexible enough to be milled, warmed and bent to a face without shattering, and they are the reason your optician can heat a temple and reshape it. In conventional acetate those plasticizers are usually petroleum-derived. So a frame that began as cotton and wood pulp still, at this point, contains a petrochemical component.
