What Does UV420 Mean?

UV420 sounds like UV400 with more protection. It isn't quite - the extra 20 nanometers aren't ultraviolet at all. Here's what the number actually claims.

UV420 turns up on listings often enough that people reasonably assume it is UV400 with a bonus. The number is bigger, the acronym is the same, and no seller is going to explain the difference in a product title. So here it is plainly: the extra twenty nanometers are not ultraviolet light.

Where ultraviolet actually stops

Light is measured in nanometers of wavelength, and the ranges are not a matter of opinion. Ultraviolet runs up to roughly 400 nm; above that you are into visible light, starting with violet and blue. That boundary is why UV400became the shorthand it did — a lens that blocks everything up to 400 nm has blocked the whole ultraviolet range that reaches your eyes. There is no meaningful UV left above it to catch.

So a UV420 lens is not offering 5% more UV protection. It is offering complete UV protection plus filtering of the first slice of visible blue-violet light. Those are two different products described by one number, and the number is chosen because it looks like an upgrade.

What UV420 is really describing

A blue-light filter. That is the honest translation. Filtering into the 400–420 nm band means cutting the shortest visible wavelengths, which typically has two visible effects: it warms the view slightly, because you are removing blue, and some people report it reduces glare-related eye strain in bright conditions.

Whether that is worth anything to you is genuinely a matter of preference. Some people love a lens that warms and enhances contrast — that is essentially what a brown or amber tint does, covered in our lens tint guide. Others find any color cast distracting. Neither camp is wrong.

What matters for this page is that it is not a sun-protection upgrade, and the blue-light health conversation it borrows from is about screens and indoor lighting rather than daylight. The evidence base around blue-light filtering for eye health is a lot less settled than the evidence for UV protection, which is not in dispute.

The standards question

UV400 is not a formal certification either — it is an industry shorthand for a measurable, unambiguous claim, and it maps cleanly onto what eye-health authorities recommend: block 99–100% of UVA and UVB. There is also a real international standard, ISO 12312-1, covering sunglasses for general use, including UV transmittance requirements.

UV420 has no equivalent. There is no shared definition of how much of the 400–420 band a lens must block to earn the label, no required test, and no threshold. A lens filtering 20% of blue-violet and a lens filtering 90% can both print it. That is the practical problem with the number: even if you decide you want blue-light filtering, the label does not tell you how much you are getting.

How to read a listing that says UV420

Two scenarios, and they call for different responses.

  • The listing says UV400 and UV420. Fine. The UV claim is there, the blue-light filtering is an extra, and you can decide whether you want the warmer view. Nothing to worry about.
  • The listing says only UV420.Slow down. It is likely that the lens does block all UV — almost any lens filtering to 420 nm necessarily filters everything below it — but you are now relying on inference rather than a stated spec. A seller that reaches for an unusual number while skipping the standard one is a seller worth reading more carefully in general.

And the rule that overrides both: lens darkness is not protection. A dark lens without a UV filter is worse than no sunglasses at all, because the darkness opens your pupils and lets more UV through. The short answer

Insist on UV400— or 100% UVA/UVB, or a cited ISO 12312-1 conformity claim. That is the specification that protects your eyes, and it costs makers almost nothing to include, which is why any frame worth buying states it.

Treat UV420 as a feature, not a safety spec. If you like a warmer, higher-contrast view, it may be a small bonus. It is never a substitute for a stated UV figure, and it should never be the reason you buy a lens that has not told you what it does with ultraviolet.
